Moxi Junction hosts jazz concert

Following the Maize Fall Festival Parade last Saturday, October 11,

Moxi Junction hosted a jazz concert on their patio. It was free to attend and bands could book times to play.

The first band was Air Traffic Jazz, who have been together for four years, the band consists of junior Scott Hershberger on piano, senior Sam Bayliff on bass, freshman Brailey Louis on trombone and piano, and Jordan Steinbrock on the drums. The second band to play was Stand Benders Sax Quintet, who have been together for three years, consists of junior Cody Adams on alto and soprano, Alec Doerksen on alto, sophomore Caleb Abbot on enor, and Devin Hatfield on baritone. Both bands have the same leader, Branden Morse. Most of the players go, or have gone to Maize High.

Junior Cody Adams has been playing alto for seven years, and soprano for five years. Many of the players can play more than one instrument.

“There was a good crowd waiting for us at Moxi Junction,” junior Scott Hershberger said. “We didn’t start when we wanted to because it was difficult to get back from the parade.”

The two bands did not play their own music. Together they played a number of jazz songs from Benny Carter, then split up and played songs individually. Both bands practice a total of 3-4 hours every weekend. The bands played jazz music for a total of about two hours.

“I was very excited to play along with the saxes and it was a fun experience,” Hershberger said.
