Maize South senior Isabella Ponce Galaviz had a shocking surprise waiting for her during 4th block on Wednesday.
Maize South high school received a call that she had won $100,000 through the Rudd scholarship, giving her a full ride to any public college of her choice in Kansas.
She was selected in a group of about 50 winners from roughly 700 applicants. She expressed so much shock, excitement and gratefulness in the moments after receiving her check in the middle of class.
“I just couldn’t believe that this is even happening. I’ve been stressing, I’ve been thinking about this so much I think about it everyday,” Galaviz says, “…I’m just so happy.”
Galaviz is going to major in biology and hopes to pursue her doctorate in optometry. She now holds the title as the first student out of Maize to ever win this scholarship.
