More than 300,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. October is Breast Cancer awareness month and is time to help those with the disease and remember those we have lost to it. In 2022, it was estimated that 670,000 women worldwide died from breast cancer.
Shelly Poynter was a beloved teacher and coach for the Maize District. In February of 2012, Poynter died of breast cancer after a 13 year battle at only 48 years old.
The Shelly Poynter Scholarship is a scholarship established by Poynter’s family after her death. The scholarship awards $500 to one student from Maize High and one from Maize South based on academic achievement and extracurriculars.
The scholarship is a way to honor all of Poynter’s contributions to the Maize community and remember her life. After a long journey with Breast Cancer, Poynter will continue to be a figure in Maize.
