“Me and a couple of my buddies, we decided to start our own hacky sack group and we’ve been playing for a couple of days in lunch or like before or after school and we really enjoyed it,” says sophomore Korbyn Womack, who created the hacky sack team Instagram. 

A new trend has emerged in the everyday school life of a select group of high school students. Hacky Sacks. This y2k throwback of a student hobby has been especially popular amongst our own OneMaize media members Korbyn Womack, Andrew Scheffer, and Brady Daniels. On May 19, an unofficial school hacky sack team instagram was made where these students can show off their skills. 

“We [Korbyn and a group of his friends] honestly just found it [hacky sacking] super enjoyable and we were like, ‘you know what, why can’t we just make this a team?’,” Womack explains, “And, so I created an Instagram account for just like a Maize High hacky sack team, we actually want to like compete against other schools, we’re kind of in the works of talking to other schools and seeing if they’ll make their own hacky sack team.”

Scheffer, who amongst his peers in Mr. Tarletsky’s room has been credited as one of the best, explains that this trend of hacky sacking and flip flops began on TikTok, and has gradually reached the for you pages of high school students in Maize and surrounding areas. 

“It makes me feel hipster,” Scheffer says “It’s pretty fun, it is pretty difficult, but it’s easy to just have friends together to do it.”

Scheffer also explains that despite the TikTok trend emerging recently, hacky sacking at Maize High is nothing new. He explained that last year during football weights, several players would bring hacky sacks and play with them during their free time.
