The Maize High Drama Club kicked off their first show this week with auditions for “The 39 steps.” Auditions were held on Wednesday, September 2nd and the show will be on Nov. 7-8 at 7:30 in C13.
“The 39 steps” is a spy comedy that narrates the story of Richard. The play has lots of physical comedy and is sure to make the audience laugh. The new drama teacher, Miss. Gerig, announced the play last May before school let out.
When asked about the details of the show, Gerig explained, “a little bit about the show, 1930s- 40s Hitchcock film, ‘39 steps’ and it was adapted into a play where essentially, a very small cast, anywhere between 4 to 8 people, play all the different characters from the movie. If you think about it, it’s kinda like a spy movie meets Monty Python.”
“The 39 Steps” is geared towards audience entertainment and will be quite enjoyable to watch as stated by Gerig.
Gerig said, “I want the audience to have a good time and to escape into the world within the show. It’s nice to come to the theater sometimes and forget all about your problems and that’s a part of it. It’s really about Richard, who is the main protagonist, and he’s a lonely man and somehow getting involved in this like miscommunication and confused identity, ends up with him having a more fulfilling life.”
The drama community seems to be very excited for the upcoming performances for this school and a large group showed up to audition for a spot in “The 39 Steps.”
We asked Vice President of the drama club, Evan Gregory, his excitement for this year. Gregory responded, “I’m looking forward to all the ways to make new friends this year with all the new people coming into theatre.”
As a new teacher, Gerig has lots of hopes for this school year. She said, “I’d like to try and program a little just in terms of diversity. Also I’d like to have our rep show for class as well but for me, the goal is to kind of discover who all the students are since this is my first year and try to tailor the sessions accordingly.”
To purchase tickets for “The 39 Steps”, they can be purchased online or at the door. For more information on tickets or the show, ask Miss. Gerig in room C13.
