Boys swimming won the AVCTL League championship for the seventh year in a row.

Maize finished with an overall score of 454 points. A 101 point lead over Newton who had 353 points.

The boys are proud that they carried on the legacy and have strived for the best this season to make sure they would be successful.

“It feels great. We worked hard all season. [I’m] not really surprised with our results considering how hard we worked,” senior Brett Young said.

This is head coach Tedd Gibson’s second year coaching the boys swim team and is very proud to have such a successful team.

“Maize is blessed to have some very fine athletes come out for swimming this year,” Gibson said. “It’s a great honor to be able to coach them and and carry on the winning tradition we have established.”

With winning seven years straight comes tradition and the boys always celebrate the same way.

“At the very end we jump into the pool and chant and scream,” senior Preston Barley said.

The boys say that it’s really fun. So fun in fact, even coaches Gibson and Jeremy Bernard got in on the tradition this year.

“It was very cool. The champions swim is an old tradition in swimming. Some coaches never get to join those and celebrate all of their accomplishments was a very humbling award,” Gibson said.

The boys will travel to Topeka this weekend to compete in the state tournament.
