Everybody has a story: Brock Horning

February 11, 2016

Editor’s note: This is a series of stories that will spotlight Maize students chosen at random. The idea comes from reporter Steve Hartman’s series formerly broadcast on CBS News.

Brock Horning was only eight when his parents divorced.

“At first, I was sad and I cried a lot about it,” Horning said. “Now I don’t really think about it … I’m getting used to it.”

A few years after his parents divorced, his father moved to Oklahoma City. Horning and his younger brother, Brant, travel over 160 miles to see their father every other weekend.

“My dad lived [in Wichita] for about three or four years,” Horning said. “Then he had to move away because of his job. My dad’s lived there for about two years now.”

Horning said at first he enjoyed the trips to see his father because it was somewhere new and exciting. Now, Horning feels there’s nothing to do and he doesn’t have friends in Oklahoma.

Though Horning may not like the visits to his dad’s, he has no problems with his father.

“I still have a pretty good relationship with my dad, even though we don’t live together,” Horning said.
