Art can be expressed in many different ways such as sculptures, painting, sketches. But one of the most popular forms of art at South are murals. South holds some of the most talented painters including Graycee Meyer,12 , Claira Lackey, 11, and Kara Miller, 12. Taking a look down almost every hall, students can find a unique piece by one of these gifted art students.

A well-liked mural by Cooper Blaske, 2017 graduate, is located on the lecture hall wall. The painting of a human hand meets a robot hand. This is interpreted in many different ways by all of the students who pass it each day.

“Students are responsible for coming up with ideas so I let them research and go tour the halls to find possible places for a mural,” Daniel Gegen, art, said. “Sometimes the space itself will inspire them.”

Being chosen to add a piece of history to South’s walls is a huge reminder of all the talent that this school holds and the past students who have contributed to it as well.

“I think it is really cool that we get to exhibit our art work in the school and we get to add to the artistic culture of the school,” Graycee Meyer, said.

The “Art in Action” class is only a term long so occasionally the students have to finish their pieces throughout parts of the day. Their hard work and determination pays off.

“We should put up as many as we can to cover up the blank spaces,” Claira Lackey, said.

Many students and teachers hope to see more murals being put up to make South have a more artistic atmosphere.
