Five students win Gold Keys in Scholastic Art and Writing Awards

January 21, 2016

Five students won the Gold Key at the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards this January. Seniors Isabelle Rawley, Benjamin Emerson and Allyson McDaniel, juniors Bailey Tredway and Tiffany Nold all won the Gold Key for their artwork. Their work will be on display at the Wichita Center for the Arts from Jan 29 to March 6.

Isabelle Rawley, one of the five, made a intricate metal dragon in her jewelry making class.

“I put a lot of work into and I was really proud of how it turned out in the end.” Rawley said. “It’s so much fun and it’s actually not as hard as you think it [jewelry making] would be.”

Since 1923, The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards have recognized young students with amazing talents. Students in grades 7-12 are invited to apply each year. The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, presented by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers, is a nonprofit organization that gives students opportunities for recognition and scholarships for their work. Last year alone, 300,000 original works were submitted. Over $250,000 is given annually in awards and scholarships to top award winners.

“I submitted to the competition because it’s a really good way to get your art out there and recognized.” said McDaniel. “I want to go into graphic design or animation because I’ve always loved drawing since I was really little. It would be a lot of fun to design things people see everyday or go to the movies to watch.”

Bailey Tredway said she hopes to pursue a career in the arts.

“I’m trying to keep my options open, but it’s really hard because art is just scary to think about as a career. It can be done, but it’s really competitive and the schools are really competitive.”

Senior Allyson McDaniel, juniors Bailey Tredway, Tyler Stuart, Maddie Gallagher, Ashley Carpenter, Kalyn Compton, Spencer Shively and sophomore Madison Mullen all won Silver Keys.

Seniors Tori Lemon, Isabella Terrill, juniors Hayley Utter, Kelsey Harris, Kalyn Compton, Alex Goodman, sophomores Jansyn Andres,Kalyn Compton, Alex Goodman, Jadyn Landreth, and freshman Aiden Campbell all received Honorable Mentions.
