Six varsity debaters, seniors Sandy Carlo, Alexia Gonzales, Justin Cuddy-Elwell, juniors Kyle Stutzman, Meet Kapadia, and Matt Warner will all be competing today at Olathe Northwest for state.

Carlo and Gonzales took second during regionals which Gonzales said made her feel confident about today’s tournament.

“I’m hoping we can at least get as many wins … than losses,” Gonzales said.

The team has been preparing for state all season by practicing different tactics. They do a lot of research and practice rounds with other debaters.

This is Carlo’s first state debate tournament and she said she is excited to see what happens.

“Well this is actually my first time,” Carlo said. “[I’m excited I’m] just getting to go and getting to see the other competition.”

If the team does win, Gonzales said they would celebrate by going to get food.

“I think we have the talent,” Carlo said. “[If we win I’ll] be really freaking excited.”
