Senior Keiryn Swenson leads team to continue on in the 6A girls state basketball semifinals.

Senior Keiryn Swenson scored 24 points as the Lady Eagles defeated Blue Valley Northwest 49-30 Thursday at Koch Arena to advance to the state semifinals.

The Lady Eagles, the top seed in the tournament, improved to 23-0. They will play Shawnee Mission Northwest at 3 p.m. Friday in the semifinals.

Swenson, who earlier in the day was named the Kansas Gatorade Player of the Year, scored 20 in the first half as the Lady Eagles went into the break with a 26-19 lead.

“I thought I had a solid game,” Swenson said. “At practice, we’ve been working a lot on our defense, shooting a whole lot and running over our offenses trying to make sure there aren’t any holes.”

Maize’s other top scorers were sophomore Taylor Holmes with eight points, and senior Daley Handy with five.

Though the team looked strong, Swenson said that there could be things to improve on.

“Honestly, tomorrow I hope the we just play our game and keep everything under control,” Swenson said. “We need to work on coming out strong and not being nervous.”
