The Lady Eagles took first place in a winter basketball tournament over the weekend at Emporia High School.
The first round on Jan. 29 against Olathe North resulted in a 63-33 victory. Senior Keiryn Swenson was the front runner for the Eagles’ offense with 11 points. Junior Lauren Hills and sophomores Jacey Handy and Brecken Roe also made strong contributions to the offense with 24 combined points.
The semi-finals against Washburn Rural brought Maize to a 50-37 victory. Swenson gave the Eagles 15 points and hit 6-for-9 shots from the floor.
In Saturday’s championship game against Leavenworth, both teams put up a hearty fight to the finish. The Lady Eagles triumphed against the Pioneers with a shot by senior Daley Handy in the final seconds of the game.
The Eagles will be in action again on Tues. at Newton High School.
