Students participate in class-based food drive

Diane Moser's classes hold food drives in order to help the community.
Diane Moser’s classes hold food drives in order to help the community.

The psychology and sociology classes are helping Diane Moser feed Maize families. These classes give students a chance to see the kids they’re helping and it provides an opportunity to earn community service hours. The classes also provide dual credit for Wichita Area Technical College.

The classes make 12 to 14 bags a week for nine weeks with food that the students bring or food that is donated. The bags consist of, but are not limited to: soup, fruits, veggies, mac and cheese, pasta, cereal and peanut butter and jelly. The 300 to 400 pounds of food that is left over after the nine weeks is donated to the food bank.

“I think its a big thing for these big kids to get in the classroom and see and help the community out and to be role models for the younger kids. I think that’s a big portion to see what teachers do on a daily basis to do the same for kids; it’s beyond learning, it’s character. And then the community itself, we’ve had families thank us for being able to help them survive during the week with these foods,” Moser said.
