Whitney LUcas size

The Mel Hambelton Tailgate Party will feature Maize athletes and cheerleaders at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Mel Hambelton Ford dealership at 119th street and Kellogg.

Two students from Maize have been nominated to receive the most outstanding female athlete award. Seniors Whitney Lucas and Emily Griggs received the nomination by being voted as two the top five female preseason athletes in Wichita. The winner of the award will receive a plaque recognizing their achievement.

“It’s exciting. I’ve never been nominated for an award like this,” Lucas, soccer player, said. “I’m honored that I get to represent Maize High.”

The cheer squad is scheduled to perform during the tailgate party along with the cheer squads of other participating schools.

“I always just love watching my girls come together and perform as a team and see our school spirit,” cheer coach Dee Dee Vermillion said.

At the tailgate party, surrounding Wichita schools will show their spirit. At this event awards, prizes and money are given to the participating schools.

A school spirit award will be given to the school showing the best school spirit. This award is judged on fan apparel, overall tailgate enthusiasm and the best use of school color. The school winning this award will receive $1000, second place will get $750, third place $500.
