Many changes have been made to the school store this year. With Michelle Obama’s efforts to make school lunch healthier, only certain foods with nutritional value will be sold in the school. This includes the vending machines and the cafeteria.
The school is required to follow the “smart snacks” guidelines, which is eliminating popular foods such as poptarts and ramen.
“It will definitely affect our sales, it sucks but we’ll manage,” said senior Kristin Russell, one of the cashiers at the school store.
All schools are required to follow the guidelines provided by Healthier Generation, and must keep all nutritional labels to show proof that the product is healthy. A representative of the state comes to look at these labels and check if the school is following their guidelines.
“I think its silly,” said the school store advisor, Penny McAnulty. “I’m hoping it won’t be around forever. Once the kids get used to it, it will be okay. If they really want to eat something they will buy the product.”
