On Tuesday, October 22, 2024, students at the Maize Early Childhood Center were treated to learning about fire safety and equipment, courtesy of the Maize Fire Department. With two large vehicles lining the school’s entrance, excitement mounted quickly for the preschoolers.
Organized into groups for rotation, students listened and watched while learning not just interesting facts, but important and life-saving information. Maize firefighters taught students what to do in the event of clothing catching fire: “Stop, Drop and Roll”, and then they invited student volunteers to practice with them.
Because every second counts in an emergency, firefighters train to rapidly put on all of their gear. After explaining the function of their personal equipment, ECC students watched in amazement as firefighters demonstrated, in real time, how quickly they are able to do just that.
But for many students, the true highlight of the presentation was being able to get close to the fire trucks. Maize firefighters showed the children all of the equipment and parts of the vehicles: gauges, hoses, tool compartments, pump panels, ladders and more.
