Girls on the Run will have a bake sale Wednesday and Thursday in the commons during En-Cor to raise money for race entry fees.
Girls on the Run is a nonprofit national organization intended for 3rd-8th grade girls.
However, freshmen Paige Hutson and Brooke Wilcox with the help of physical education teacher Casey Tarrant wanted to adopt the concepts from Girls on the Run and bring them to Maize High.
“We decided that we needed to do something where girls could hang out together outside of class, outside of school and promote Maize High in a positive light,” Tarrant said.
Tarrant said that during the time the group was being created, there was a lot of negativity going on amongst some girls and they wanted to do something that would change the spirit at that time.
“They were talking about how they hated running. And I was just like ‘Well, let’s do something to where exercise is positive,’” Tarrant said.
Even though this year it has started with freshman girls, anyone is eligible to join Girls on the Run.
“Sometimes we come in and eat M&M’s, and sometimes we actually work out,” Tarrant said. “It just kind of depends on the mood of the group. It’s not really about running, it’s about the extra bonding time the girls can get outside of school for those girls who aren’t in sports.”
Girls on the Run will continue throughout this year and will be available next year for girls who would like to join. If you would like more information contact coach Tarrant.
