On April 11 Mary Beth Tinker will come to Maize and share her story and discuss freedom of speech and press.
The tour will be held at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. The presentation is open to anyone and is free admission but donations will be accepted. A reception will be held after the presentation for anyone with questions for Tinker.
In 1965 Tinker and other friends wore black arm bracelets to school in mourning of the loss of 1,000 soldiers that died in Vietnam.
They were instructed to remove the bracelets and then got suspended from school.
The Supreme Court ended up getting news about the Tinker vs. Des Moines case and in 1969 Tinker won for freedom of speech in American schools.
The Tinker ruling is in most American History textbooks today.
Now Tinker travels around schools in America and discusses freedom of speech and press, on her Tinker Tour.
