Maize High students show support for their school at a wrestling meet on Thursday, Feb. 2. Around 100 students from Red Rage attended the final dual of the season which decided who became the AVCTL Division 1 champion.

The Maize High Fight Song plays from the Maize High band as students and staff enter the gym. Red Rage gets up and cheers with school spirit and encourages students to join with them. Maize High’s own cheer team joins in with Red Rage by bringing their skills to the floor as they show off with flips, turns, and other great moves.

Maize High School’s Red Rage club takes in students to promote school hype. Red Rage’s goal is to promote sporting events, create a custom culture for school spirit, and encourage unity between students.

The leadership team for Red Rage is dominated by females, but many males participate in Red Rage and still attend sporting meets, homecoming events and more.

Red Rage members go to sporting events themselves to bring encouragement to the players, and excitement to the viewers. Each month, members of Red Rage meet to discuss fresh ideas for a better Homecoming week, spirit themes for athletic events and more.

Senior Bailey Martin enjoys supporting the MHS sports teams and serving as a leader for the group.

“Red Rage is fun,” said member Bailey Martin. “You get to cheer on your school sporting events, be on the leadership board, you get to plan all the themes, and you kinda get to run the ‘behind the scenes’ of everything, which is really fun and exciting.”

Red Rage is fun and has many perks and advantages to their membership. But every Red Rage member has their own favorite thing about the spirit club.

“My favorite thing about Red Rage is supporting our school because I really believe that like all of our support is what helps push our teams toward their victories. So, ya, I just love supporting our school,” said Martin.

Red Rage is important to the students and staff of Maize High School as well. Martin feels that being involved with the group can help you get out of your comfort zone.

“I’d say, well since Red Rage is our student section. I would say that if they have a student section, definitely recommend, like, being a part of it, and going to everything you can because, not only are you supporting your school but you’re getting involved,” said Martin.

Red Rage member Mallory Hertzel joined the student group to add a leadership position to her high school experience.

“I joined Red Rage because I wanted to be a part of the student section and lead because I feel like, we needed leaders this year, so, I feel like, me stepping up it was a good idea this year and lead it, and then I also liked planning the theme because I had some good ideas,” said Hertzel.

With all the perks of being in Red Rage, students may want to join and ask how to be part of Red Rage. Mallory Hertzel suggests that students begin thinking about becoming members towards the end of the year.

“There’s a sign up at the end of the year. Ya, they have like a Google Form you can sign up at the end of the year,” said Hertzel.

Senior Kennedy Topping believes that Red Rage membership allows Eagles to feel connected to decisions for the student section.

“Yes I think it was worth it to be in Red Rage,” said Topping. “It allows you to have a say at what goes on in the student section, and it’s a big part of our school I feel like because we support our athletics very well.”

“I would describe Red Rage as the group of students that’s gonna lead the student section and be in charge of the student section at the games. We pick out themes for each season, come up with ideas to get students to games, and then just lead the cheer team onto victory.”

Red Rage supporter Abigail Grantham has embraced her role and enjoyed her experience with being a part of Red Rage.

“Ya, I think it was a big part of high school being able to help with the student section, and just, it’s what makes the games fun is the student section and all the kids in it, so it was an important part of sports and athletics at Maize High,” said Grantham.

Sponsor for the Red Rage group, English teacher Savannah Fisher, believes in the vision of what Red Rage tries to do for the Maize community and is looking forward to supporting Maize High sports this spring and next school year.

“I think what’s special about Red Rage is that, it’s all students being supportive of other students, and so it’s a good, positive environment to join in on,” said Fisher.

“Thank you first of all for always being supportive and being involved,” said Fisher. “I can’t wait next year for football, and then of course basketball, swim, all of our sports next year.”
