Culinary students attend Kansas ProStart competition

Many of the Culinary Applications students attended the Kansas ProStart competition Wednesday.

Team Skillet placed third overall against 20 other teams. Team members are seniors Jacob Swim, Krystal Rivera and juniors Deidra Walker, Courtney Britton and Dalton Rupp. The team also received “Best beef dish” and “Rookie of the Year.”

The other team, Team Black, consisting of seniors Patricia Frazier, Elyssa Self and Heith Wright, and junior Jesse Gutierrez placed second in “Rookie of the Year.”

The teams were granted 60 minutes to cook meals that they created recipes for and have been practicing.

The event lasted all day, and with awards comes scholarships and medals.

Rupp won the “Best of Knife Skills” award for his Julienne cut.

“I was surprised; I didn’t think I was gonna get it,” he said.
