This past Friday, No. 1 ranked Maize High defeated No. 8 ranked Kapaun Mt. Carmel in the second round of the 2022 Kansas High School Football Playoffs: KSHSAA, 43-14.

The Eagles and Crusaders went head to head during a downpour on the Eagle’s home field.

“Playing in harsh conditions obviously changes how we have to go about our game plan,” junior Cole Chalashtari said. “We prepared just like any other game, except we used wet balls all week in practice to try and get used to it.”

The Eagles had a total of 378 rushing yards, 175 of which came from senior running back Daeshaun Carter. Senior quarterback Avery Johnson brought the team 61 rushing yards and three of the seven Eagle rushing touchdowns.

This upcoming Friday, Maize will go up against No. 3 ranked Hutchinson at home for the third round of the KSHSAA playoffs.

“We really are trying to stay with a one game-at-a-time approach, but if we play our best we are very tough to beat,” Chalashtari said.
