The entirety of Maize and the surrounding area know of the number one Halloween destination in all of Wichita: Field of Screams.

People who attend the attraction may consider themselves experts on how the behind-the-scenes are run, but the majority of Halloween enthusiasts do not truly understand the sacrifice and work that goes into creating the annual attraction.

Actress Hannah Moss returns for her third consecutive year playing her terrifying character Mad Mary. Using her job to escape from reality, Moss embraces the opportunity to scare people.

“I love having the opportunity to get to do something with Halloween and getting the opportunity to um, ya know, scare people and give them the option either to laugh or scream and so it’s a good time and the family here is–everybody here is so awesome and so having that opportunity, that’s why I keep coming back,” said Moss.

Behind the allure of the frightening exterior, the owners Kip and Jody Scott create a petrifying Halloween environment. The owners work tirelessly to bring a perfect frightful experience to their loyal customers by starting on the next year’s exhibit at the start of each new year.

“Once Christmas is over, we might take a few weeks to rest, but then we start deciding what we are doing for the next year,” said Jody.

The Scotts have done many different takes on Halloween festivities at Field of Screams. They are continuously changing their attractions and they look forward to ideas for the future by scouting other events nationwide for fresh ideas.

“We were the first place to bring in Zombie Paintball, we did Lazer Tag, the Escape Shakes, we would like to get a second event going out in the field like a big, high-quality hay ride,” said Kip. “We’ve been wanting to do that for years, that’s what we’re shooting for, it might happen next year, might be the year after that we’re not sure yet.”

Enveloping the majority of the owner’s lives, Field of Screams takes tons of work and effort to run. To run a flawless season, the business not only takes the owner’s effort, but also every actor, makeup artist, and even the average customer.

“It’s very exhausting, it takes a special type of person to do what we do here, be prepared to be cold, be prepared to be completely hot and drenched with sweat, be prepared to be sore the next morning,” said Moss. “You’re going to lose your voice, your bones, your muscles are gonna be sore, you’re gonna come home with bruises and scratches from things that you may have no idea how you did it, but at the end of the day, all of us here enjoy it.”
