Science teacher Stanley Bergkamp is in the top ten for the Shell Science Teacher Award. The award is given to one science teacher from the United States or Canada. A finalist will be selected in February.
After years of teaching Bergkamp is considered a favorite teacher by many students at Maize. Bergkamp said that he heard of the award and, after a short discussion with principal Chris Botts, decided to apply.
“It was very much an honor, especially since it was open to so many different teachers all across the country and Canada,” Bergkamp said. “I was very pleasantly surprised.”
Senior Chelsey Ratzlaff said Bergkamp deserves the award because of his light personality and interaction with his students.
“He is really funny and he gives really good analogies that make sense,” Ratzlaff said.
