Maize defeated Derby 36-35 improving to 7-0 Friday night. This is the first win for Maize against Derby since 2014. Derby led Maize at the end of the first half and continued to until the end of the fourth quarter. Sophomore wide receiver Justin Stephens talks about how the team pulled together a rough performance to end up with the win.

“We talked about our mistakes at half and what we need to do to fix them,” Stephens said. “We just had to want it more than them and we did.”

Stephens said this was the most fun game he’d been a part of in his football career.

“Honestly games like that are what make football fun,” Stephens said, “nail biters and close games that get everyone on the edge of their seats.”

Being a close game, junior wide receiver Landon Helm said that winning the game felt surreal.

“We haven’t beat Derby in six years,” Helm said. “It was a game that I will remember forever.”

Maize will face Hutchinson this Friday for the chance to win the league championship. If Maize wins, this will be their first league championship win since 2003.
