The Eagles’ season came to an end Friday night after a defeat by the Northwest Grizzlies 80-42.

It is the second year in a row Northwest eliminated the Eagles in the state semifinals.

Senior Camden Jurgensen scored on a long run in the first quarter to give the Eagles a 14-7 lead, their only lead of the game.

Senior Caden Cox ran in for a touchdown with seconds left in the second quarter, with Maize down 45-28.

The Grizzlies pulled ahead further in the second half, while the Eagles tried to keep up. Jurgensen ran for a touchdown in the third quarter, with the Grizzlies leading 45-35.

Cox said he was disappointed the team didn’t reach the state championship this year, but was grateful for a good season.

“We were here last year” Cox said. “Overall we had a good season, but it just wasn’t what we expected.”

Despite the loss, senior Colton Crockett also said he remains optimistic about the team’s season, and hopes they can continue to perform well in the future.

“I feel like we did pretty good” Crockett said. “Tonight was just not our night. I’m proud of the boys. I just hope they carry it on next year.”
