Internet is back up at Maize this week after being down for the better part of two weeks.
Superintendent Doug Powers said the district’s network was hacked by an unknown outsider causing what is called a broadcast storm. The attack bombards with requests to connect, overwhelming the system and shutting it down. District officials were not immediately aware that the glitch was an attack.
“We have identified the cause of the problem, have applied a temporary fix that has disabled some of our district functionality and have ordered a permanent solution,” superintendent Doug Powers said.
Powers said the solution has been a very involved process for the technology department and cyber security experts from an outside vender. Details of the fix are not being shared to avoid an attempt of future attacks.
“Advertising what is being done to solve these problems, people intending to harm our system may do research to try and attack again,” Powers said.
The solution is expensive, as are the consultants and downtime, but students and staff are very dependant on online services. Most students keep their work on Google Drive, making much of their work and resources unavailable without internet.
