Looking back at summer memories. Missing the ice cream and not the grades

MJ McCollum, Reporter

Finding motivation after relaxing on the beach with the waves crashing in the back, snowboarding down icy mountains in Colorado, or spending time with friends jamming out to music with the windows down and the wind in your hair. Spring break really fools you with a heart break. After break all we can think about is the sweet summer time that is just around the corner. Even though we have to bare less than 49 days left of school, it is very difficult to finish the homework laying by the edge of my bed, as I write this. I am one to procrastinate but not this terrible. I just want the freedom, ice cream, and happiness that summer brings. Not having to deal with juggling my grades anymore, I rather hold up the white flag as a point to say “I give up”.

Finding motivation in the smallest things are the biggest stress right now. Motivation is what we all need at the moment. With summer coming around the corner, you’d think it’d be easy to fly by past these next 6 weeks with the thought “summer. Summer. Summer.” It’s not. You just want to not think about the next five essays you need to write within the end of the year. This to me seems nearly unbearable, but that’s what it’s coming down to.

As high schooler’s we tend to lose sleep due to homework, studying, jobs, extra curricular activities, e.t.c. Procrastinating doesn’t even fit this category. It’s in it own.  For me, I’m always doing homework at the cheer gym, in my room, or ending up at 12 am on the day it is due. In some ways it is beneficial to me because I am thinking more clearly, and motivated so I can go to bed to get the slightest amount of sleep. Although I always end up relying on my Dr. Pepper going through out of my day.

Why do we do this to ourselves? Why do we wait till the last minute, does it really take as long as we think it does? Not really, for the most part I am just not in the mood to move and rather watch Ellen, or anything but that one assignment that is chasing me throughout the week. I need motivation, and hopefully you need some too. Here are 5 quick tips to make you feel ready to “run the world”.

The first “MJ” tip, is my favorite, look through Pinterest. Look at what inspires you.   Pinterest may make me a little too anxious with the perfect handwriting and super creative abilities. But it makes me want to work my hardest to be proud of my work. Pinterest somehow

always knows what we need to get out of bed and get stuff done.

Second, listen to really exciting music. Some of my favorite playlists with The Growlers, The Jonas Brothers, Grace Vanderwaal, and Jess Glynne, really motivates me to get going and even clean my messy room. Music finds a way to get everyone into their feelings or ready to do something.

A to do list can keep you on your toes and on top of everything you have packed into your 12 hour day. For me I color code all my varieties of classes, chores, and tests. Somehow color coding everything helps my mind know what thing is more important. This can mark up what your priorities are to get stuff done.

Setting tighter due dates for yourself can allow you to save some time. Maybe finish that movie you have started but never got done because you always fall asleep. Due dates already come way too fast, but setting down your goals for when you think you need to be done before the due date can be a breath of fresh air.

By swaying a donut in front of your face, you can get a lot done. Not physically but mentally. Find the good thing that you can do after you finish your work. Whether that be donuts, sleep or face masks. Think of all the free time you can get after finishing that one last sentence on your essay.

All these short tips can help a bunch. Easier said than done of course, but with a little extra motivation you can make it to the sun rays of summer. With these, you can make it, you got this. Summer time is just around the corner.
