Supporting our Senior Citizens club is a club that gives students a place where they can go to retirement homes to spend time with senior citizens. Students in the club go to the retirement homes to talk, play games and, most of all, simply give senior citizens some company.

Supporting our Senior Citizens club was started by junior Faven Simmons this semester. Simmons is the president and Amy Jensen is the sponsor. They plan on going to the retirement homes to hang out with the senior citizens after school and meeting to plan events to do with the citizens during En-Cor. Their first meeting is this Thursday in Jensen’s room.

“At first it started just as a history project, but it’s become more than that,” Simmons said, “It became more about the citizens instead of the grade. I wanted to work with the elderly because I feel like there just isn’t enough people out there that care. They wonder when their family is going to visit them or they’re stuck there thinking they don’t matter.”

Students that join the club will be able to give ideas of how to help the senior citizens by the board.

“This is such a great opportunity to give elderly people someone to talk to, tell their stories to and to hangout with,” secretary of the club Bethany Tschosik said.

Senior citizens spend most of their time in their retirement home and without much company. Simmons said she thinks getting to spend time with other people, especially younger people, can really brighten their day.

“I think that it is time that we all take time to appreciate how much the older generation has done for us,” Simmons said. “It is a good way of giving back to the community.”
