Two Maize students got big surprises Wednesday reuniting with their fathers who were serving overseas. Juniors, Hannah Martinez and Hailey Stiverson were filled with joy when their fathers surprised them during school. Hannah’s father, Zach Martinez was gone for around 14 months, and Hailey’s father, Jamie Stiverson left for El Paso around 13 months ago.

“My heart sank,” Zach Martinez said. “I was so nervous and excited to see her, all I wanted to do was give her a big ole hug.”

Both of the girls said they were very close to their fathers and are very excited to spend time with them. Hailey’s father, Jaime Stiverson, was gone for her soccer season last year and is ecstatic to have him cheer her on in the stands this season.

“I missed doing everything with him and just hanging out, going out to eat and watching movies all the time together,” said Stiverson.

Hannah described her father as her best friend and her hero. She said she was very happy but also super nervous to be in front of the whole cafeteria.

Hannah giggled when she said that she loves her mom, but it was hard not having him at home. They spent all week cleaning and making sure that he came back to a home and not a house.

Both pairs said they missed each other very much and are excited to be back together.
