A mysterious Twitter account targeting Maize students popped up in feeds over the past 24 hours. The account is spreading rumors about students at Maize and Maize South.

The owner of the account is unknown. It appears that it was once an account that promoted Maize football, which is how it acquired followers. However, it is not believed to be directly associated with the team or the school.

Maize High administrators and officer Jamey Dover became aware of the account after a parent emailed the school Wednesday morning.

The tweets started sometime Tuesday. There are no earlier tweets that mention Maize football on the feed now, but the account appears when a Google search is conducted. The last time tweets appeared on the football page was July 15, according to a Google cache search. The tweet was asking for someone to take over the account. It is not known who ran the account.

The account remains private to most students but still continues, at this moment, to post gossip.

The account has been targeting students with rumors about nose jobs, personality types and relationship statuses.

Senior Sydney Werner is one of the students who had comments directed toward her.

“They need to get rid of it …,” Werner said. “They need to be disciplined.”

Maize staff still continues to search for the person responsible for creating the account.

Dover said anyone caught using the account could be charged with a crime.

“That’s harassment by telecommunication through social media,” Dover said. “I mean that’s cyberbullying. I could go after something like that and charge them with a misdemeanor.”
