Math teacher Jenny Meirowsky’s has started to have her students stand for about 30 minutes each class period to help increase blood flow to the brain. Her students stand while taking notes every day. After finishing the notes, they have the option to keep standing or take a stool and bring it to their “standing desks on wheels”.

Senior Jansyn Andreas feels that the standing desks are helpful in the classroom.

“I like them because it gets your attention, and once you get into your notes you don’t really pay attention to the standing,” she said.

Many students have different opinions on the standing desks, just like Senior Nate Jones.

“I’m always really tired in that class and so that doesn’t help,” Jones said.

Although he said he agrees that it helps him to stay awake.

Meirowsky learned this new idea from a math conference she attended last year. She said another math teacher inspired her to bring a new learning tool to Maize.

She also believes that her new method will help her students in the long run.

“One of the big reasons [she started the desks is] there’s been a lot of research lately that it’s better for students to stand while they’re learning,” Meirowsky said. “Sitting stops blood flow to your brain, and it’s better to be up and moving.”
