Junior Grant Bugbee scored 21 points to lead the Maize Eagles to a 59-43 victory over the Salina South Cougars on Friday Jan. 8.

Bugbee lead the team Friday with 21 points, but pointed to defense as the success.

“We came together as a team and locked down their big man in the post,” Bugbee said.

The victory pushed the Eagles to 6-0 on the year and left them as the lone unbeaten team in 5A.

Bugbee acknowledged the pressure of being undefeated and ranked number one, but was confident that the team can handle the pressure.

“There is definitely a target on our backs, but I feel like we’re gonna have to work hard and actually defend that name being number one in 5A,” Bugbee said.

The boys hit the road to defend their new number one ranking at 7:30 p.m. today at Salina Central.
