Finding warmth in a cold world

November 19, 2015

Society nowadays seems to be so attached to the cold, lifeless electronic device that sits in our once warm hands.

My question is why?

Why have we become so distant from everyone?

Why have we found comfort in people through a screen?

What happened to human to human contact where dinner dates were a thing instead of “Netflix and chill”?

Why is “talking” to someone a thing?

What happened to just taking a person out on a date to get to know them, and if you didn’t like them there wasn’t a second one?

Our society is so broken, just like the people within, and as it grows older we grow apart from each other. Cracking more and more each day like a broken windshield in the winter.

It’s sad to know that it’s never going to be the same as it was back in the ‘50s.

No more flowers and little meaningful handwritten notes; now a long paragraph that your boyfriend texted you about his, most likely, nonexistent feelings is the most “amazing” thing.

But that’s not warmth, and it’s sad to know that so many people think that’s warmth and comfort.

Have you ever stopped and thought about what it would be like without that menacing device in your hand? I know I’ve thought about a world without technology, and I can’t fathom it. Our generation has grown accustom to these things. The next generation of kids will be even worse.

They are literally pacified with a tablet. If a child starts crying, most parents I’ve observed don’t scold their kids anymore. They simply give them a little electronic device that magically makes them stop crying.

When my sister and I were younger, we would spend hours on end in a room playing with our ridiculous amount of Barbies or we would go outside and play kitchen with old dishes my mom gave us.

Now, my 6-year-old sister sits downstairs playing Barbies but has a tablet next to her the entire time. When my mom suggests she goes outside and plays, she throws a fit about how she wants to watch the iPad.

Albert Einstein once said, “ I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots”.

That day has come; our generation is full of idiots who don’t know how it feels to be comforted by the warmth and love from another human instead of the cold, lifeless demon that we associate our lives with.

A cold screen, along with a cold heart. That’s how we’re all living our lives now, and that’s how the kids of these next generations will grow up to be.
