Maize falls to Derby in first game of the season
September 8, 2015
The football team started their season with a loss at Derby.
The Eagles started out strong with sophomore running back Dalyn Johnson making the first touchdown of the season.
“It was very exciting to make the first touchdown. I feel like I got to start the year off with something special,” Johnson said.
The Panthers soon caught up in the second quarter, tying the game 7-7. However, Maize retaliated shortly after with a touchdown made by junior Tyson Love, taking the score to 13-7.
With six seconds left in the half, junior quarterback Hunter Lamunyon made a 20 yard pass, caught one-handed by junior wide receiver Jake Doerflinger.
“I think the catch gave our team a lot of confidence for the second half,” Doerflinger said.
Unfortunately, the confidence they gained with the catch wasn’t enough to carry the team. The Panthers came back in the second half ready for war, taking the Eagles down 42-20.
The Eagles will play at 7 p.m. Friday at home against Garden City.
