During EnCor on Dec. 8, KAY Club will be hosting the World Market in the library. This is the second year for this fundraiser. The fundraiser raises money to build stoves for families in Guatemala.
People who participate in the World Market can sell a variety of products for profit, of which they decide how much is donated to help build the stoves. Donations are not a requirement but are encouraged.
“The stoves cost $120 to build. We raise $100 and the family receiving the stove pays $20,” KAY Club representative Suzanne McKaig said.
Currently, food is cooked in open fires on the dirt floor of their homes. The number one killer of women in the region is smoke from the fires. The stoves create less hazards than the fires, such as: children falling into the open flames causing burns, smoke getting in eyes causing eye disease or long skirts of women catching on fire.
“By building a stove, we help them out and there are less deaths and injuries,” KAY Club president Mariah Rey said.
Paying for these stoves helps the Guatemalan community by providing local employment to build the stoves and using local resources.
KAY Club is trying to raise awareness for the stoves while creating a fun experience for staff and students.
“Not only would you be supporting a great cause, but this is also a great opportunity to promote your own club or organization. We hope that you are able to participate in our upcoming event,” McKaig said.
