A search warrant was executed Tuesday by FBI agents at the Maize Educational Support Center.
Director of Communications Lori O’Toole Buselt confirmed that the district is complying with the investigation. Buselt released the following statement on Tuesday afternoon in an email to parents, guardians, all district staff and media personnel:
“Maize USD 266 currently is cooperating with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in an ongoing investigation. The investigation is not related to students or the safety of our students or employees and is limited to the Educational Support Center. At this time, the district is unable to comment further.”
On Wednesday, parents were sent a notice regarding the Skyward system and increasing digital network security. The district requested that passwords were reset for the system as soon as possible. The district reiterated that the investigation does not pertain to the students or safety of students and staff.
As of Thursday, two district employees have been placed on administrative leave in wake of the investigation. USD 266 has not commented whether those employees were placed on paid leave.
Several rumors and speculations are circling among students and parents regarding the investigation. Freshman Megan Paul commented on the investigation, believing that it should rightfully be kept private until students, parents and staff are able to know more.
“We should not make assumptions about what could happen next and just let it be,” Paul said.
Maize High principal Chris Botts does not believe that there is any reason to be concerned and any interested party should not give credence to false statements.
“We all want more information,” Botts said. “I just don’t think that it’s possible to get more information now because it is an ongoing investigation. I trust the people over at district office; they are letting us know as much as they can while also cooperating with the officials. I firmly believe that if we were in danger or there was something to be afraid of, they would let us know.”
Botts maintains a positive outlook for the district concerning the investigation.
“I still believe that Maize is a wonderful district that provides a great education for our students. No matter what it is, that’s not going to change. We are still going to work hard to make sure that our students get a good education,” he said.
