Teacher Beth Janssen and her students will be taking part in the Project RunAway fundraiser for the reopening of the Spaceshift Gallery at Wichita State University.
Portfolio and Sculpture II students will create costumes with superhero themes. This project will get students involved in the Wichita art scene and develop components for their portfolios.
The top five projects will be used in the gallery opening.
Many students are utilizing the chance to use unconventional materials. Senior Lauren Hadley plans to utilize her materials to create a junk food and sweets theme: “The cape is going to be made out of popcorn bags, the shirt will be made out of candy wrappers, the arm cuffs [and shoes] will be out of pop cans.” She plans on sewing the materials together.
Other students, such as junior Angelia Wiglesworth are using more common materials such as cardboard and paper but are choosing an unorthodox style: “Well it’s supposed to be super hero theme, but I like Halloween. So I just decided that there is no superhero to save Halloween, so I would make one. “ Her project incorporates a large skull base with a hood wrapping around the model.
