A bright Maize High Senior named Avery Henry loves to write and be creative. She also likes school and wants to know all the Maize and Maize South drama that goes around at the schools.
What In The AP Is Going On Here?:
When the second semester of 8th grade started for me, I got to pick out my classes for my very first year of high school. Thinking it will make my GPA great in High School, but also get me future scholarships for college. I decided to sign up for Pre-Honors English 9. What I didn’t know then but now know is that I, Avery Henry, will enter a battlefield with a bunch of the other students getting ready to conquer a bunch of homework that a Harvard Student studying to become a doctor receives. I first interviewed Maize junior AP english teacher Mrs. Uya Knowit to see how she feels about teaching an AP class and she says, “I understand that my students have to do after school activities such as chores, jobs, sports, etc. I do however expect them to read 10 chapters of their book, fill out 4 pages of their packet that go along with the book, study 40 vocabulary words, and finish a project that would take a month to create all before the next day. It really isn’t a hard class as long as you as you keep up with the work and study when you need to, you should get an easy A.” I then interviewed Maize South senior student Wonda Full who had been in previous AP classes and she says, “During sophomore and junior year, I took AP english and chemistry classes hoping it would help my sucky GPA as I did not pay attention my freshman year. Instead it made my GPA worse, as I had B’s and C’s in those classes due to how hard the classes were. I’m not taking any AP classes this year as I want to have a calm senior year and not worry like a chicken that has gotten his head cut off multiple times.” Finally I interviewed Maize chemistry honors 2 teacher Dr. Ree Sponsibal and he says, “I sometimes feel bad for my students because of how much work they have to do. I get that it is an AP class and they have a little bit more work than other normal classes. However, they have to do as much work as I did when I was trying to get my PhD at Yale University, creating a music album in the classical music genre, and learning how to ride a whale all at the same time. I just feel like they need to have a break once in a while from doing all this work.” As we can tell from these interviews, it is not easy to be an AP student during high school. At least you will get a good GPA and potential scholarships from it, or will you?
What Type of Christmas List is That?:
I remember when I was 9 years old back in 2016, I wanted Barbies, Slime, and Shopkins. However, what I wanted the most back then for Christmas was the Lea Clark doll. She was the 2016 American Girl Doll who loved taking photos and helping out animals. If we compare what I wanted as a 9 year old for Christmas versus what my little sister Daloolu (who is currently 9) wants for Christmas, there would be an out of this world difference between the two lists. I asked a teacher and my sister to see what a Christmas list looks like these days. I first asked Maize South P.E. teacher Mr. Centa Claws to see how he feels about Christmas lists these days and he says, “I remember when my twin girls Mariah and Carrie were just 5 years old and all they wanted for Christmas were Anna and Elsa dolls and a baby brother. Now they’re both 16 and their little brother is 11, but their Christmas lists are crazier than they have ever been. Both of the girls want $275 gift cards from different places like Sephora, Lululemon, Crumbl, etc. Also Mariah wants a jumbo extreme lavender Stanley cup, while Carrie wants an ultra tiny white Owala cup. Even though their little brother Skippedy-Toylet is only 11, he also has crazy items on his Christmas list. For example he wants $500 just to use it to buy more Robux for his account, and he wants us to essentially build a whole basketball stadium in our driveway, so he can practice basketball once in a while. Hopefully my wife and I’s marriage doesn’t almost fall apart like it did last year because of the kid’s insane Christmas lists. I just wish the kids were young again, so they can just ask for simple stuff instead of all this extra fancy stuff that they probably will get tired of in the next month or so.” I then finally interviewed my sister Daloolu to see what her Christmas List is like this year and she says, “I only have a couple of items on my Christmas list, and they are the ultra supreme mega skin moisturizer from Drunk Elephant, the very very very long and thin light pink necklace from Kendra Scott, two golden retriever puppies who I would name Sleigh and Queen, the iPhone 16 Pro Max…” I definitely thought that she wouldn’t get some of the items on her list like the iPhone 16 Pro Max, especially since I didn’t get my very own phone until I was 13, and it definitely wasn’t the newest one either. Turns out I was wrong as she not only got all of her “less expensive” items on her list for Christmas, but she also got a phone which was the iPhone 14 and a golden retriever puppy who she ended up naming Reeseler. She ended up however being a tiny bit ungrateful for it as she wanted the iPhone 16 Pro Max and two puppies instead of the iPhone 14 and one puppy. Whether it is, the most expensive item in the world or just a pair of socks, we should be thankful that we are able to have presents for Christmas, or even have Christmas at all.
