The Health Occupation Student Association (HOSA) is an international club with college, high school, and middle school chapters. This club helps prepare students for any future medical pathway they want to pursue. Chris Morrison from the Maize Career Academy has brought this club to the district to give Maize and Maize South students the opportunity to grow in their skills and knowledge in the industry. Morrison thinks this club is a great opportunity for kids wanting a future in the medical field.
“What HOSA tries to do is prepare kids for a career in the healthcare field. No matter what job they have, they want to help kids become better leaders,” Morrison said.
Students who participate have learned lots about the industry and grew more interested in the different types of positions in the medical field.
“I have learned how to further my knowledge about different healthcare opportunities which will allow me to enhance the delivery of quality healthcare to multitudes of people,” Maize South senior Aubrey Scott said.
The Maize HOSA club participates in different events and activities around the community such as the Teddy Bear Clinic. This clinic originated in children’s hospitals to demonstrate to kids who are undergoing a procedure how it will be done to make them more comfortable. The HOSA club has now brought this idea to the district elementary schools by creating different stations for students to learn about different medical treatments and procedures. These stations consist of taking an x-ray, checking vitals, bandaging, giving a flu shot, and weighing and measuring teddy bear patients. Scott had lots of fun interacting with the kids and sharing the pathway she is passionate about with others.
“What I enjoyed most about the teddy bear clinic is how intrigued the little kids were in what we were doing to their bears,” Scott said.
The students of HOSA encourage others to participate in this club, so they can extend their understanding of any medical professions they are interested in, participate in community events to spread the information that they are learning about, and show the leadership they are gaining.
“This is an amazing club for people who are interested in the medical field because it helps you to learn about so many different jobs within that industry as well as how to make the most of whatever path you choose to take,” Scott said.
