During the first quarter of the game against Hutchinson, the Eagles were asked to exit the stadium and seek shelter due to an approaching severe thunderstorm.
What began as a sunny day quickly turned violent, with winds reaching speeds of 22 mph and lightning striking nearby. Ironically, the team played “Thunderstruck” as their walkout song just before the storm hit.
Athletic Director Dan Loving and the administration collaborated to address the situation. “We did it as an administrative team, including the athletic director from Hutchinson. It was really just everyone needing to get inside in an orderly fashion. We gave them instructions, asking them to leave the stands and head to their cars or into the building. Everybody did it, and there weren’t really any problems. I was hoping the storm would stay away, but that didn’t happen,” Loving said.
The Salthawks scored a touchdown in the first quarter and added another with six minutes left in the third quarter, making the score 14-0. Despite the Eagles’ efforts, they lost to the Hutchinson Salthawks, 21-0.
This marked the Eagles’ third consecutive loss of the season, leaving fans and players frustrated. Senior Andrew Stotler offered a straightforward assessment: “We didn’t do our jobs on both sides of the ball tonight, and that’s why we lost.”
