Maize kicked off their season with a defensive slugfest, but ultimately dropped the opener 7-3 against the Goddard Lions.
The Eagles started strong against Goddard being the first on the board with a field goal from senior Mason Teague. Towards the end of the first quarter, Goddard scored a touchdown. Going into the second quarter Goddard held possession of the ball for quite some time before senior Andrew Stotler made a recovery on the fumble.
“The defense did a great job as expected. They held them [Goddard] the entire game but I thought we’d have more production on offense,” said junior Shannon Jones when asked about the team’s performance.
Both teams seemed to be losing momentum after the half and Maize needed to flip the game around quickly.
“In the locker room and out here [on the field] we’re all trying to pick each other’s heads up and hold each other accountable on everything, trying to keep the good energy up,” said senior Mario Lerma.
Maize made a quarterback change in the last quarter due to a lack of production. By the time the Eagles picked up the ball, the game clock hand already hit zero.
“I think we just got to clean up the little things. It was the little mistakes that killed us. We have to stay working together as a team and stay positive,” said senior Kevin Watkins. The Eagles are back in action this Friday the 13th at Andover.
