Katie Shepard – Teachers transition to counselors

While working multiple jobs outside of school, Katie Shephard is also a Maize High School counselor.

The former Spanish teacher says she doesn’t miss anything about teaching. “The things I liked about teaching I still get to do,” Shephard said. She enjoys problem-solving and helping kids learn to advocate for themselves.

When working, Shephard says flexibility is a huge part of the job. “I feel like we have more work that we have time to do but I feel like that’s true for teachers too,” Shephard said.

Even with the workload and stress of being a counselor, Shephard shows no regret in her decision to become a counselor. “I love that I get to know kids for four years and I get like this whole package,” Shephard said.
