Friends and parents gather to celebrate 2020 graduating seniors in parade
Seniors and families rally together to commemorate 2020 graduating class in different neighborhoods around Maize South.
Balloons, streamers, graduation caps and signs printed with local vendors lined 2020 senior yards during the drive-through celebration.

Last Thursday night, 2020 Maize South seniors Erin Pettera and Nicki Albert organized a parade in celebration of the 2020 graduating class.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, all of Kansas’ schools including the USD 266 district have shut down and shifted to online schooling. The graduation ceremony has also been cancelled and moved to a later date in July for the 2020 class to celebrate their achievements over the past four years.
The idea behind the drive-by parade was to celebrate and remind seniors that Wednesday was their original graduation date from Maize South.
Friends, parents, and teachers met in one of six locations at 5:45 p.m. to prepare for their assigned route. The “leading car” had yellow balloons attached to the front, and the other decorated cars were to follow. Starting points included The Warren Theatre, Maize Middle School and Scooters on Ridge road.
Each line left their starting point at 6 p.m. and 2020 seniors were waiting outside their house for the parade to pass and their turn to celebrate with a few dozen of the Maverick family.
