Speaker Nancy Pelosi recently refused to hand over the articles of impeachment to the United States Senate, stalling impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump.

Democrats have been pushing impeachment even before President Trump was inaugurated in January 2017, and have cited charges broadly with everything from rigging the election through collusion with Russia in which the Mueller investigation exonerated him to having past affairs on his wife. 

Now that the Democrats control the House and Speaker Nancy Pelosi has taken the reigns, it has allowed them to officially impeach Trump on the charges of abuse of power and obstruction of justice. The Democratic majority pursued bribery as well for a time, but eventually opted to drop the charge. Articles of Impeachment also cite the future 2020 election Ukraine interference as a punishable offense.

In the articles of impeachment under the obstruction charge, the document states, “Donald J. Trump has directed the unprecedented, categorical, and indiscriminate defiance of subpoenas issued by the House of Representatives.” This alludes to the documents requesting President Trump to provide documents of his foreign affairs with Ukraine in which the president denied to provide since the judiciary did not approve said subpoenas.

Under the abuse of power charge, it states “President Trump abused the power of the Presidency by ignoring and injuring national security and other vital national interests to obtain an improper personal political benefit.” Abuse of power is the main charge, alluding to Trump’s call with Ukraine in which the Democrats accused Trump of withholding funds to Ukraine until they investigate former Vice President Joe Biden on the Biden family involvement in corrupt dealings.

A common misconception among American citizens is that a majority vote for impeachment in the house results in removal from office. However, it takes a process through both chambers of Congress. The next step in the process is for Nancy Pelosi to hand the articles of impeachment to Mitch McConnell, the Senate Majority Leader, to hold a trial for the president.

This is the first impeachment process in history in which the votes have been partisan, while all the others, both parties voted a majority for impeachment. Therefore, since the Republicans hold a majority of the Senate, it will most definitely be a vote in favor of not removing the President from office, signaling another Trump run for the 2020 presidency.
