Freshmen were introduced to South rules in the shape of skits performed by the Hats off Improv Club on Aug. 15. The improvisational club, sponsored by Wesley Rice, English, organized the performance one week before school started and had mixed emotions about its audience.
“I was hoping they wouldn’t just boo me off. I was hoping they found me funny and informing,” Andrew Horning, 11, said.
Students and teachers alike agree that the new take on rule presentation was an upgrade from year’s past presentations, which have largely been a recitation of what’s expected.
“We felt like kids would gain more (from the skits) than listening to Mr. (Dave) Hickerson or me telling them the rules,” Cort Haynes, assistant principal, said.
Although practice was held during the last week of summer break, the performers got a chance to strut their skills to the school, giving incoming students an idea of the types of performances the club does.
“Mr. (Cort) Haynes had the idea to present rules in skit form and Mr. (Wesley) Rice gave us a general idea, but it was mostly on the spot,” Kayla McLaughlin, 11, said.
