The Maize High girls tennis team finished second at the league meet on Monday.

Junior Kira McGrown said the season has gone well for the team, although they have put a lot of work into the season. McGrown said she is glad to see their work being paid off in this way.

“With everything holding us back, we have powered through and made great improvements,”  she said. “The progress made throughout this season is amazing.”

Senior Abby Canupp said the team is continuing to work hard and stay focused on their goals ahead.

“I think we already achieved one of our goals at league,” Canupp said. “But I would say that our team is hoping to do well at regionals so that we can qualify for state.”

Canupp said the team has improved in more ways than one, but the biggest improvement they have made is their teamwork.

“As a team I think we have bonded more than last year,” she said. “Not only with fellow teammates, but with the coaches as well.”

McGrown said her teammates have pushed through the off season and made herself and each other better. They’re always supporting each other.

“We always challenge each other to be there best,” McGrown said. “The team is also so supportive, we will sit by your court and cheer you on whether you are winning or losing.”

COVID-19 has gotten in the way of many senior’s last seasons. Canupp said she is glad that she has been able to keep playing with her teammates.

“I have loved playing tennis with my teammates over the past six years,” she said. “I’m so thankful that the Corona virus didn’t get in the way of finishing out our last year of tennis.”
