Football beats Goddard 42-0 in homecoming game

Maize football won against Goddard 42-0 on Friday. The Eagles are now 5-0 this season.

The Eagles jumped to a 7-0 lead after the first quarter. Senior Tyris Hopson ended the first half with a 55-yard touchdown, leaving Maize with a lead of 28-0 going into halftime.

“We just listened to our coach,”Hopson said. “He just makes the play and calls it in. We just prepared for Goddard all week, our coaches do a great job of preparing us.”

Senior Caden Cox scored a touchdown within the third quarter, leaving Maize with a 35-0. Cox said Goddard is definitely the best team they’ve gone against so far. He said practice will help the team in succeeding this season.

“[We could] keep the same intensity and not get a big head,” Cox said. “I feel we have the talent to take it all the way.”

The Eagles return this Friday with a home game against the Salina South Cougars.

Volleyball

The volleyball team had a great week with two strong wins against Salina Central and Campus. After the bus ride to Salina Central on Tuesday, the girls beat Campus in only two sets. They won the second match against Salina Central in two sets as well.

Boy’s Soccer

The soccer team tied with Bishop Carroll with a score of 2-2 on Oct. 1. The boys also won against Newton with a score of 2-1 on Oct. 3. The soccer teams next game is a home game and will be on Oct. 8 at 6:30 against Goddard.

Girl’s Tennis

The tennis team has competed in around 27 tournaments and there’s more to come in the month of October. On Oct. 7, the girls placed third at the AVCTL Championships at Hutchinson. State will be on Oct. 18.

Girl’s Golf

The girls golf team competed at Salina in their league championship on Tuesday. Lexie Ridder came out in third with 83. Brooklyn Blasdel finished fifth with 85 and Reina Cline finished in eighth with 92. Other players include Olivia Allen and Melanie Pereira.
