Swimmers stare down upcoming meets and are ready for new competition this year.

With swim meets coming to a start, swimmers are beginning their preparation. To prepare, they change things such as their diets and what their practice set up is.

“Before smaller meets we just work really hard, and for bigger meets we back off at practice a little bit, so we taper and in club swim we do meditation,” sophomore Stasia Roath said.

In the beginning of their season they work hard to get all of the swimmers into good shape, but as the season progresses they slow down so their bodies can rest a little before going into the bigger meets.

“For bigger meets we have a technique week, we don’t really swim a lot of mileage,” sophomore Spencer Will-Gallegoes said. “But we do technique and stroke work, and it helps our bodies recover.”

Before meets swimmers have to fuel their bodies in order to have enough energy for meet days.

“Before a big meet I eat a lot more, this is going to sound like a lot but, I probably eat like 1000 more calories, I eat so much the night before,” Will-Gallegoes said.

Another thing that the team does is team dinners, this helps with team bonding and getting the right things in their bodies to help them power through long meets.

“They usually make something very healthy like pasta, some protein, stuff like that,” Roath said.

With this all this preparation the team starts feeling confident. Although the team is always changing from years past, swimmers still feel prepared and assured that they will succeed in the season to come.

“We have a smaller team than last year, but I think we have more talent than we did last year,” Will-Gallegoes said. “We’ve been working hard so I think we’re gonna do good, but I don’t know, anything can happen.”
