Feb. 15 and 16 the Maize boys swim team competed in the state competition in Topeka, Kansas.

Head coach Ted Gibson and Maize coach Jeremy Bernard took seven swimmers the meet. Over all the team took 9th.

“I was happy because this was the first time was the first times I had ever gone to state and it was cool being in the top ten,” sophomore Josh Sprowls said.  “It also made me want to do even better next year.”

Sprowls said their biggest competition going into the meet was McPherson. But the boys had been preparing all season, and were ready to swim their fastest when they got to the pool.

“To get ready for state the most important thing was getting enough sleep,” Sprowls said. “Also the week before state is a lot of fun because your looking forward to state and the practices are pretty easy which is really nice.”

The boys didn’t know exactly what to expect for the meet, so placing 9th was a great accomplishment for the team, especially after losing their nine year winning streak at league.

“I’m looking forward to next year and I hope we can do even better,” Sprowls said.

With the boy’s season over, the girls swim team will start practice on Monday along with other spring sports.
