With a final score of 55-41, the girls basketball team defeated the Newton Railers on Friday night. Maize scored the last 14 points of the game after Newton fought to keep them at 41 points.

After a power outage, the game ended early and the Eagles went home with a victory.

Senior Alexis Cauthon said the team did well not giving up and keeping one of Newton’s best players away from the three-point line.

“We never gave up when they came out shooting lights out,” Cauthon said. “We did a good job of stopping their best player in the lane for the most part. We also ran the floor well and got to the free throw line. We also boxed out very well.”

Senior Halie Jones felt the Eagles should’ve kept Newton from shooting a little better.

“We could’ve stopped them from making the amount of shots they did,” Jones said.

Jones said the team had a pretty clear thought in mind and that this game needed to be a win.

“Our mentality going into this game was to not overlook them and pretty much it was going to make or break our chance of winning league,” Jones said. “We went into it thinking this is one of the biggest games this season and we had to come out with a win at the end.”

Cauthon had a good feeling about the game and knows they worked hard throughout.

“I think we played hard all the way through,” Cauthon said. “We never gave up no matter what happened. We fought to the end and started playing as a team well.”
